Finding new MEP work. What worked for you?

I'm a fairly young PE, and I'm the head electrical engineer in a small MEP firm (~8 people). To go where I want to go with my job, I want to bring more work into the company. For those of you with experience looking for new MEP clients, what has worked for you? Do you start with architects...

    Raise promised, but never given...

Thanks for all of the tips, I do appreciate getting different perspectives. I was at my previous position for almost three years (no, that isn't very long), and recieved 2-3 raises/year. Smallest was 3%, biggest was 10%. Starting pay was mid-forties, so the increases weren't exactly leaps and...

    Raise promised, but never given...

I get your point, but the main thing that bugs me isn't the raise. I wish he'd realize that this is something you shouldn't do to people. Other that this, I believe his business dealings are honest and respectable. However, I'm going to have to deal with him in the future on an increasing...

    Raise promised, but never given...

I work at a small engineering company, I'm the head electrical engineer over a few people. I oversee every electrical aspect of all of our projects from start to finish. I work more hours than anyone in our office (ten people), including the company owner, primarly because I'm the only...

Recommend study materials for EE PE Exam

Thanks for the information. I'm really thinking about getting the PPI (John A. Camara) books, everyone seems to recommend them. Do they have a thorough amount of basic material? The problem is that I never studied these subjects at all in school (motors, generators, transmission lines, etc.)...

Recommend study materials for EE PE Exam

I'm in the process of studying for the EE PE Exam in April, and I'm figuring out that I need more references (I'm using the MGI "PE Readiness" study books). I need references that cover Generators, Motors, and Transformers. I spent virtually no time on these subjects in school, and I'm feeling...

Where do you look for jobs?

I'm currently in a decent position, however I'm getting married in six months and sometime in the next year I would like to find a position that better fits my long term goals. Currently I'm only looking at monster.com and careerbuilder.com, but I feel like they likely represent much less than...

    Career in MEP consulting?

I am an EE currently working with a small MEP (Mechanical/Electrical/Plumbing) firm, and have been with them for about 18 months (fresh out of college). It is not at all what I expected to do when I was in college. Now however, I somewhat enjoy the work, though I think it is not very...

    New job offer, tough decision...

Thanks to everyone for your input, I appreciate every response. It is great to get some advice from some experienced professionals. The "MEP" work I am doing now is "Mechanical Electrical Plumbing", basically the only branch of engineering I know of where a PE is really...

    Non-compete agreement, or termination!

A Mechanical Engineer friend of mine works for a company who designs UAVs. Recently they told their engineers they have to sign a 1 year non-compete agreement, meaning they cannot work for any other company associated with UAVs for 1 year after termination for any reason. If he doesn't sign...

    New job offer, tough decision...

I'm a young Electrical Engineer, currently working working for a small MEP consulting company. I have little more than a year of experience since graduation, though I had 16 months of internships when I was in school. I never saw myself doing MEP work when I was in school, I always figured I...

    Good analog design book(s)

I have recently been offered an excellent oportunity, however it is one which will require significant analog and digital design skills. Can someone recommend a good book or books for analog design? I have my BS in EE, but I know I have a lot to learn before I am proficient in analog design...

Acad 2000i & winXP - Open dialog box view

I found a way to set the default file view for the "Open" menu in ACAD. When you try to open a file in ACAD 2000i, the default view in is the icon view, and it won't follow the current windows view setting. The view mode is controled by the value "ViewMode" in the registry...

Acad 2000i & winXP - Open dialog box view

When I hit "open" in Acad 2000i running in XP, it always shows the files in icon view, instead of in list or detail view. I've changed the folder view option in XP, but it doesn't affect AutoCad. How can I fix this? Thanks!

Need to find a permanent mold casting company...

Thanks. I figured it could be cast much cheaper, but really didn't know for sure. I found a guy who apparently knows some local people who can help me with this. If anyone knows of any foundry listings etc., I'd still be interested in seeing that. Thanks for the help!

Need to find a permanent mold casting company...

This topic may not exactly fit this forum, but I think this forum is more appropriate than any of the others. Right now I am having a crude, 15lb, mild steel piece cut by machine shops. It is very similar to a "dumbell" weight, tolerances are very large, etc. I think it would be...

    UL Listings & other certifications...

I recently started a company working with another engineer & an anesthesiologist. Basically we are developing new medical devices. I have some questions concerning UL listings and the like. For our first projects, we chose more simple devices which wouldn't require any certifications etc., but...
