    Catalyst

Normally, catalyst productivity is measured on how many kg of catalyst used to make one metric ton of polymer produced. And before it is used, it needs to be activated to make it active and this process involves some weight loss like moisture and other volatiles.

    FIRE FROM MOLTEN POLYMER

Sorry if my question is not clear enough. It caught fire when the die plate was under maintenance and the die plate chamber door was open. Thanks guys for your response. tmc1

    FIRE FROM MOLTEN POLYMER

Hello, My plant produces high density polyethylene and the final product is pelletized resins after extrusion. My problem is that when the molten polymer is exposed to atmospheric air, it catches fire. Last week, it happened again, and this time the extruder die plate caught fire although very...

    CAVITATION DUE TO VALVE CLOSURE

The problem I face in plant is to determine the maximum angle of closure from full open before the valve starts to cavitate. I am working on a project to implement partial stroke test on valve on-line and need to determine to what max. angle the valve is allowed to stroke before cavitation kicks...

    TWISTED TUBE HEAT EXCHANGER

Does anybody know anything about Twisted Tube Heat Exchanger? It claims that its performance is better than convectional HE. Due to the use of twisted tube inside, no baffles are used so the weight is relatively lighter and smaller. Also it is vibration-free. Any comments welcome. Thanks.

    SIS IN A PETROCHEMICAL PLANT

I work in a petrochemical plant producing HDPE. Ethylene is polymerised in the reactor and its product is further extruded into HDPE pellet. My new assignment is to implement Safety Instrumented System (SIS) in the plant. We use HAZOP as a PHA tool to identify the potential hazards and actions...

    Information Age vs. Machine Age

All being said, I still believe that US will still be the center of gravity of this modern world simply because the US controls the 'information'. Yes, it is true that manufacturing has moved to other countries but the manufacturing processes are designed in the US and ship out to other...

Encouraging women to enroll in engineering

Female make up almost 50% of the population but why not many female engineers? If the work needs field surveying and inspection working under the hot sun, female engineers are in disadvantage and more so if they get married and have kids so career interruption! One suggestion is to encourage...

    Equipment Classification Systems

I have not seen any standards or convention on this. All is up to your company policy.

    Storage tank implosion

Also make sure your tank can withstand some degree of vacuum and with proper venting system. Pulling of vacuum can cause tank to collapse when content inside is being discharged at high rate. Vacuum breaker is needed.

Nitrogen Purity - Is 98 % too low?

In general, 99.5% is commonly used in industry and is considered low in purity. Our O2 content is 10 ppm or lower. It depends on your application.

    VOC EMISSION FROM PETROCHEMICAL PLANT

I work in a HDPE petrochemical plant. Can anybody help by educating me the way to estimate the quantity of VOC (mainly ethylene, isobutane, hexene) fugitive emissions to the atmosphere through compressors, rotary valves, pipe flanges, control valves and other process equipment. Hydrocarbon...

    Engineering Management

Hi, The upside potentials for MBA are far better than M Eng Mgm. MBA about management and leadership and you can employ people, including those with other Master or PhD to work for you. M Eng Mgm seems have no such premium and I think because it is too technically oriented in nature. Just my...
