Major Highway Embankment Failure June 8, 2024

It will be interesting to see how many outfits, if any, respond to WYDOT's RFP, what they propose, and how much it will cost. MTNClimber, you compared the Million Dollar Highway to this situation. Do you think that's fair? The MDH was carved out of fairly stable rock, and once carried mining...

Major Highway Embankment Failure June 8, 2024

In the video assessment by Casey he said it looked like slopes were in the range of 2:1. It's hard to gauge from the drone footage, but to my eye they look a lot steeper than that. They do seem to vary as well as you move along the curve. [Edit: In Casey's second video he acknowledged that...

Newly Constructed Gym Has Roof Collapse in New Mexico

Zero discussion about investigating the roof collapse during the NM Public Education Commission public meeting that was held April 19th, eleven days after the event. Collapse was only mentioned in passing. Link

Newly Constructed Gym Has Roof Collapse in New Mexico

SymPIe, I'm not saying this would have been a good idea. The slenderness ratio would have been huge. And, since both trusses are identical, have identical loads, and identical boundary conditions, if the primary buckling mode pushes center span point out, you would just get both trusses to...

Newly Constructed Gym Has Roof Collapse in New Mexico

What is this? Someone above mentioned the roof panels may have fallen on a construction lift. Could it be something else? From another angle this (steel) piece is inclined at a large angle from the vertical, so it wouldn't have been a vertical brace. Could it have been a steel beam, added later...

Newly Constructed Gym Has Roof Collapse in New Mexico

Still from one of the construction reels which appears to show U-shaped blocks.

Newly Constructed Gym Has Roof Collapse in New Mexico

phamENG - I suspect you are correct. As mentioned above, on top pf the precast panels there could have been additional insulation, a topping layer, and a membrane. Maybe what we see are a straight line seam in the membrane, with pieces of insulation hanging down. Not parts of the precast panel.

Newly Constructed Gym Has Roof Collapse in New Mexico

A few more comments. 1) It is unlikely that any lateral restraint of the truss chord existed within the bearing area. 2) From the aerial images, it doesn't appear that any studs were added to the top chord to tie the truss to the roof sections. I'm guessing the red that we see is simply the...

Some still of the bearing seat area.

Baltimore Bridge collapse after ship collision

What are the harbor protocols when a ship of that size loses power within a harbor area? Are they immediately required to contact the harbor authorities?

Baltimore Bridge collapse after ship collision

This marine traffic video shows the location of the tugs after leaving the Dali. It appears that no attempt is made to reach the ship until just moments before impact. This implies no mayday call was made until late in the process. Link

Miami Beach, Champlain Towers South apartment building collapse, Part 15

I was following the Herald's approach laid out in their article up until I read this: "While inspection reports indicated that the pool deck had suffered potentially debilitating water intrusion, concrete degradation was not factored into the model. The concrete was modeled at full design...

    Potential Disaster in the Making

Yeah, thanks 1503-44. My questions stemmed from more personal interest. At this time I don't plan on doing any plotting myself, but you never know. Edit>> Also. that twitter link great. I hadn't thought of looking there. This from a few days ago is interesting. Graphic tracking the seismic...

    Potential Disaster in the Making

@1503-44, those maps being put out do not indicate, or at least it is not clear to me, which regions of the flow are active. Is there any graphic that shows which are active fronts? Also, when viewing the eruption online there is the reference to 3 vents. They even indicate it on the map above...

Guide to Lava Collection 1) Carry at all times a 12 ft. extendable pole. 2) If all you have is a 6 ft. pole use any nearby object for support, like fence posts. 3) If objects like fence posts provide inadequate support, trust in your buddy to retain a firm grip on your rear pants pocket while...

    Potential Disaster in the Making

If it can be relied upon, this plot is interesting. It shows how, from Sept 1 Sep 11 to Oct 6, seismic activity has migrated both eastward and to depth. http://www.ign.es/web/resources/volcanologia/SIS/jpg/PA_SIS_eventos_2021-09-11_hoy.jpg

Those top two charts, though, looks suspicious. The M<2.0 EQ's seem to be either excluded, or are only partially included. Am I seeing that correctly?

Chart was embedded within the current live feed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtpEE276x_Y Earlier I was looking around this page, but with not much luck as I don't speak the language https://www.ign.es/web/ign/portal/vlc-area-volcanologia

    Potential Disaster in the Making

Just turned on the live feed and saw this in upper corner. Not sure where this is coming from. It only goes back 15 days but the trend looks upward.
