ASME Sec VIII Div 1 Code Boundary: Is interconnecting tubing within scope?

Question 1. If I had an ASME Sec VIII div 1 vessel with two nozzles, one at each end, and a small (<1") copper tube that connected between the two nozzles externally, would that interconnecting tubing be considered in scope? Question 2. Given the same arrangement as question 1, now with a tee...

Pressure vessel with electric heater: boiler or not?

R6155, my immersion heater is threaded into the vessel, so Mandatory Appendix 41 does not apply, and the heater itself is out of scope since the threaded connection is the first sealing surface of a proprietary fitting (U-1(e)(4)). It seems as though I would just treat the vessel as any other...

Pressure vessel with electric heater: boiler or not?

Does that ASME code specify these pressure and temperature limitations somewhere? All references to boilers refer to steam and water. Not other fluids. I cannot find any codes specific to non-water fluids with a heater element.

Pressure vessel with electric heater: boiler or not?

Hello, I am designing a Sec VIII Div 1 vessel that will have an electric insertion heater threaded into the vessel for the purpose of separating oil from refrigerant by boiling off the refrigerant. Is it correct to assume that any rules for boilers do not apply since my fluid is not water? Thanks

ASME Sec VIII Div 1: A-36 Backing Strip, UCS-66(h) and UCS-5(b)

Hello Everyone, I am trying to determine if I am able to use a 1/4" backing strip made of A-36 that remains in place without impact testing. The A-36 backing strip meets all requirements of UCS-5(b)(2)(-b), except that assigning it to curve A, it would be above my MDMT (0F). However, per...

ASME Sec VIII Div 1 Non-Perpendicular Corner Joint Evaluation

I am evaluating an ASME vessel design that has a mitered shell welded at a 45 degree angle to a flat plate using a full penetration weld. Similar to figure UW-13.2 (e-1) except at a 45 degree angle rather than a 90 degree one. I believe I can evaluate the flat plate thickness using...

Non-ASME "pressure part" welded to ASME vessel

Hi All, I have a shell and tube heat exchanger where the waterbox is welded directly to the vessel tubesheet. The waterbox is exempt from the ASME VIII rules because it contains water at 150 psi and below 210F. I am wondering if the connection between the waterbox and tubesheet would need to...

    Welded Nozzles to Flat Heads

Thanks Mike, That's what I was leaning towards. So UG-13 is more for flat heads welded main shells that form a corner joint close to the edge of the flat plate? Regards, John

    Welded Nozzles to Flat Heads

Hi All, I have a cylindrical shell vessels that is capped by two welded on flat plates. I want to connect a small nozzle (NPS 2) to the center of the flat plate. Following ASME Sec VIII Div 1, would I be allowed to use UW-16 for this connection, or would I have to use UW-13? UW-13 is for...
