    Too many jobs?

“Scratch any cynic and you will find a disappointed idealist.” ― George Carlin As an eng-tips MVP, you are no doubt a knowledgeable engineer. But after more than 30 years in the field, I'm guessing you have not complete your transformation from idealist to cynic. Take heed of TygerDawg's words...

    A coming engineering shortage ? ---- Who agrees ?

Moltenmetal, I was curious about the current placement rates at my alma mater. Here's the quote (source): Reading the most recent annual report, page 8 lists 206 mechanical engineering graduates with a median pay of $64k and placement rate of 93.33%. Michigan Tech is no ivy league...

My query is career specific but related to Nastran thus the thread in this Forum. I graduated with a MS Mechanical Engineering (vibration test/analysis thesis) with about 5 years experience in vibration testing and 5 years in structural analysis using ANSYS. After 10 years in an off-highway...

Starting new job mid-career - What advice to learn from my past?

Rotw, It's a dog-eat-dog world out there but a predominant scarcity mindset is detrimental. To come back from multiple setbacks you listed, I believe it's better to have a growth mindset to accept and seek to do things better. Happiness in life can coexist in a merciless environment.

    A coming engineering shortage ? ---- Who agrees ?

HamburgerHelper, Thanks for sharing the link! I'm unable to replicate your plot from the website data. Can you elaborate on the source of the data for your plot? Figure 4 of the website shows adjusted increases that doesn't match. Quoting from last sentence in first paragraph: "Overall, in...

    A coming engineering shortage ? ---- Who agrees ?

There is no shortage of engineers;Semicolon Neither is there a shortage of cars on the road. Prices of both cars and engineers have been steadily increasing despite increases in both population because the demand is strong. Things sure look different in Ontario where engineering wages appear...

    A coming engineering shortage ? ---- Who agrees ?

Ever-the-more, I believe H1B visa is lumped under the "Temporary visa holder" or "Immigrant" column. The original numbers I posted here appears to point to over 50% are in the technical related field. Perhaps a bit better than Ontario? In terms of supply-and-demand, prices have been going up...

    A coming engineering shortage ? ---- Who agrees ?

Please see https://www.nsf.gov/statistics/2015/nsf15328/. The statistics is muddied with economics and psychology majors. With this and other caveats; in 2013 All Scientist and Engineers (S&E)... S&E Occupations: 5,749,000 (24.4%) S&E Related Occupations: 7,439,000 (31.6%) Non-S&E Related...
