I'm a structural engineer involved in a project where a 40KVA generator has been replaced with solar and backup batteries. The client has asked the consulting team to come up with ideas on what to do with the overhauled generator, its old but working fine. Other than the low lying fruit of...
Can concrete repair mortar patch this up or is hacking off the top of the slab and redoing the concrete a better solution?
Don't worry, I instructed that all slab bays around that column be re-shored.
@JAE,
Your point 3 is somethimg to ponder on, I had not checked that strap beam but I noticed its not as deep as I expected from similar projects I've done before. I'll ask for a thorough review of walls running along gridline 4 & 11 / D-F to see whether there is any cracks, tho they are...
Did a site visit for an 18month old building since exterior renders were done but 4 year old since masonry walling was done experiencing masonry wall cracks. The building sits on very hard rock, 1m below the ground. A year ago, the neighbour off gridline "F" starting excavation his basement, the...
Need advice on the simplest method of stopping that slab from vibrating, vibration is felt just by walking. Owner needs to the sell the unit and it chases away potential buyers.
Answers I've got so far,
1. Increase depth of screed and re-do the floor finish.
2.Introduce a steel beam below...
Masonry infill wall was constructed and 6 months later this cracks that start at the junction of the wall and the soffit of perpendicularly running 1st floor beams have occured, 3 in no. all starting at a beam junction. Wall is natural stone masonry, 200mm thick 1st floor slab has offices with...
@Littlewheels,
Going by that then my go to assembly is no. 3, to ensure biggest axial force is tensile. Element material is steel hollow sections as below
@BAretired
Well, I thought the photos would be clearer. First photo is moment (green) and axial (beige) element forces, second in pink is...
@HTURKAK
I would like to remind you , provide more details to get better answers..
I just did a recon visit, so I don't have all details, if my quote is agreeable to the developer I'll have more information
@dhengr
What do the structural framing details look like in this area, on this grid line, and how could they be influencing the cracking? Is there paint or dust and crud in the cracks which would indicate that they have been there for a long time? Do similar cracks show up all along grid C...
@gte447f
my gut instinct would be that the cracking might likely be the result of something inherent to the original structural design or construction, because stress concentrations or risers are naturally likely to occur at such discontinuities.
I think I would start by recommending some sort...
@HTURKAK
"My suggestion would be , lifting the settled ftgs to original level , underpinning of the foundation."
How do you achieve this for a strip footing?
@JoshPlimSE
There is no dry wall, the wall os plastered and painted on the interior and key finish for masonry mortar joints on the exterior.
Yes, the cracks go thru beams and floor slab as seen on the third photo, the exterior wall photo
Building is 14 years old, cracking has occured within...
@hoangvhuy
Time to have a sit down with architect and developer as the joints will be required. Architect will have to shift things to accomodate these joints.
How is the ground, is it uniform along the length?
@SlideRuleEra
On seismic, we are in a low risk seismic region
Ground water could indeed be an issue,
The property sits at the brow of a slight hill, two sides as indicated fall about 30m in height in a steep slope 1:2.5 and the bottom is a seasonal stream
I noted the neighbour on the north end...
Did a recon visit to a building I've been asked to give an opinion on for the cause of cracking and recommend remedial measures.
Photos and a preliminary structural layout are attached. The building has ground + 3 suspended levels then a pitched roof, gravity load path is through load bearing...
I have a slab, made of hollow forms 375mm thick with a 75mm concrete topping reinforced with A98 steel mesh, 5mm wires at 200mm square spacing, total depth 450mm, 125mm wide joists spaced at 500mm on centre.
Partition walling needs to be introduced, some running parallel to the joists, when...
Gents and ladies, I have to apologies, I've been a bad friend, I always come to you to help me with my problems, I promise to be a better friend going forward. /s
I'm involved with a fit out job, convert a building with drawings that look nothing like what was built, into offices, Biggest...
