Educating versus Motivating versus Overwhelming versus Suffering

Junior Engineer here, First off I'd like to exclaim that I've been told I have a bad attitude. So I'm trying to change that. When I've read these comments, I just wanted to state that these junior engineers don't realize how lucky they are to even have an experienced engineer that wants to...

    Civil Structural EIT issues

Yea let's see what your attitudes are when the drafter gets paid double what you make then he hires on his son, and they are making 50 or 60 hours/week, then you get paid 12 hours of billable time a week and goes and runs his mouth about everything and lies constantly to your coworkers and boss...

PE Structural Depth Exam vs. SE Exam in 2019

I'm taking the PE exam with structural depth, which is the afternoon portion, not the SE. SE would be too hard for me right now. It seems like SE would require a really advanced and in-depth knowledge of the codes, and at the moment I'm just not capable of spending the time to go through all that.

PE Structural Depth Exam vs. SE Exam in 2019

I'm sitting for the Structural PE in april, there's no way I'd be able to pass the SE with my current level of experience. Relearning the basics of things like geotechnical, traffic and hydrology is taking me quite a while. I spent about 40 hours just on hydrology and I still going to have to...

    Civil Structural EIT issues

Excuse my rant here but I gotta get it out. These firms would rather pay a AutoCAD drafter 50$/hr than an engineer for 50$/hr to draft in autoCAD! It makes absolutely no sense! The "designers" have no engineering basis for what they are drawing on paper, they just use stuff they have seen...

    Civil Structural EIT issues

I'd hate to leave my niche here man, I feel like I excel at it honestly. Without your PE here you're just another peon that they have to worry about keeping chargeable. But hoooly smoke, do I get treated like crap.

    Civil Structural EIT issues

I do have some years of experience in petrochemical, but man the industry is so cut-throat. Everyone is so worried that the young engineer will be kept while the old engineer/drafter will get cut. It's brutal. That's why it's hard to find a good position. I appreciate your input.

    Civil Structural EIT issues

Good morning everyone, I have recently started a job about 6 months ago, 3 months into it the PE who was above me quit. He hired me on to review drawings and do engineering calculations for jobs and basically work under him, and he was also the engineering manager. It's a large firm but our...

Staadpro can calculate the Rayleigh Frequency if you use that.

    Reciprocating Compressor Foundation

That stipulation is only the weight of the rotating parts. But it looks like you will have to do a dynamic analysis for crack prevention and soils. That is a huge compressor.

    Exceeding allowable stresses

I like CANPRO'S approach to your question because as an engineer I feel if something is overstressed, then more analysis should be done, and load magnitudes looked at more in-depth. So his comment along the lines of - if I'm doing a quick analysis of something I generally take into account any...

    Sleeve Nuts Vs. Turnbuckles

I would like to join this discussion because I have read literature that says tension cables and steel rods are being phased out of steel construction, and not many engineers use them. However, I find the concept fascinating and would like to learn more about the design of these, since there are...

What is the grey x's? Is that supposed to stand for horizontal stability bracing or... I don't know?

ASD Reaction Loads, in accordance with IBC 12, need LFRD for Appendix D

Good Afternoon Gents. Noob here. I am mighty confused about this. Reactions from a building designer were given, in ASD load combinations. According to ACI 318-11, Ultimate Strength is supposed to be used for all concrete design, as per Ch. 9. Am I missing something or should I request that...

    Questions about X bracing

Koot assuming you are using the k=0.5, instead of using it's equivalent of L/2?

    Questions about X bracing

Thanks so much guys. There's an issue with my AISC login, so hopefully that gets fixed soon. WillisV, still early in my career, just trying to have some questions resolved.

    Questions about X bracing

Hello Structural Community! Here is a background. I have a scenario where I'm assuming existing bracing can't withstand compression and would work in a tension system only. I know that AISC is discouraging the use of tension only systems because of increased risk. However I just have a few...

Bolt Hole sizes in existing plate exchanger too large.

Guys what about slotted holes this exchanger's plates are 4.5" thick.

Bolt Hole sizes in existing plate exchanger too large.

The bolt hole sizes in the existing plate exchanger on site are close to 2". We assume that this was specified to be bearing on concrete with standard anchor-rod holes in the base plate, however we are connecting to a W10X49. We feel as though drilling the same sized hole in the W10X49 would...
