Hello,
We are running a modal analysis on a tank structure (modeled with shell elements. We have run several modal analyzes for the model with different mesh sizes to evaluate the mesh sensitivity. The modal analysis results appear to have similar cumulative mass participation but the...
I am designing headwall with fairly large conduit opening (8-foot diamter). The headwall has wingwalls at 45-degrees. The headwall will need to extend about 3-4 feet above the conduit per the civil grading.
I am designing the headwall above the conduit to span horizontally to the wing walls to...
Retired13 - yea sorry, those are floor plans, the hatches were highlighted in that plan view to show the key equipment the openings would cover. The roof plan has not been updated yet to include the new hatch openings.
Thanks for suggested layout of beams. That was generally what i was thinking...
Sorry I thought I attached the sketch in my original post (see attachment)https://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=4df8b80b-3177-4a7d-a9b4-0e406e41d0bf&file=Document1.pdf
Hey All,
I am designing a cast-in-place rectangular valve vault structure. Owner requested CIP instead of precast. There are several structures with different dimensions (5'x10', 5' x 15', 10' x 20'). They are 6-feet deep. They will have a non-traffic live load (300 psf). We originally designed...
Thank you all for your responses!
It seems the consensus is to use the worst case condition which would be the starting height section and carry the design throughout the length of the wall. I agree that this is the best way to keep it simple both from a design standpoint and constructability...
Hey All,
I am curious on how others approach the design and/or analysis of wing walls (e.g., for culvert headwall) or any type of retaining wall with the height of the wall sloping downward to match the grading (varying retained back fill height). Generally what approach do you take:
1)...
I struggling with exactly where the new footing would be located in your suggestion. Correct me if I am wrong, but the new footing would be located at the downstream end of the wing walls. So the kicker/strut run on top of the wing wall and where the existing wingwall terminates, there would be...
Thanks dhengr for the response!
I like the idea of constructing a horizontal beam to span across the top of the head wall for the added height and also above the wing wall for the load path.
When you say slopes down to a new footing are you referring to extending the wing walls downstream in...
Hey All,
I am working on a project in the early phases that involves slope stabilization of an embankment. There is a head wall for a twin barrel (84-inch diameter) culverts on the downstream slope of the embankment. The re-grading to stabilize the slope requires increasing the height of the...
Hokie66 - that is correct that it is more of a wall then slab. The 34 degrees is at the steepest part of the spillway. The contractor is planning on using forms to place the new concrete.
The slab is not a slab on grade. It is an overflow section of the concrete dam which is essentially hollow on the inside. The slab is simply supported and spans between buttresses.
Correct, 18" concrete slab with 2" of shotcrete.... The shotcrete will be completely removed and a minimum of 1/4" into sound concrete. The issue will be if more concrete is removed than anticipated due to deterioration and the means and methods being used. The existing slab will then be loaded...
Project Background: The project is rehabilitation of a concrete spillway at a dam. The spillway apron is being partially removed(removal of 2-3" of shotcrete surface) and removal of a minimum of 1/4" to sound concrete into the existing 18" concrete slab. This is being done via hydro demolition...
I am evaluating an existing surge tank at a hydro-plant for code compliance. The surge tank consists of steel riser and cylindrical tank with 8 built up columns supporting the tank at the springline. The columns are braced with rods and struts at 3 locations. The built-up column consists of...
