    Boiler Efficiency speadsheet

Before we can compare a steam boiler and evaluate for replacement with a condensing boiler, one needs to check steam usage. is there a heat exchanger a the end of the line? do you make DHW with steam? Is the steam used for food warmer? humidification? sterilizers? i.e some steam is lost to the...

Modifying a boiler system - switch to primary/secondary?

EP From what I can tell, condensing boilers may not work in the application, they use heat exchangers at the end of the line, which are sized for a hot side temperature coming from a non-condensing boiler. Meaning you would need to replace the HX's with much larger HX's, as condensing boilers...

Modifying a boiler system - switch to primary/secondary?

Bron Quite a situation you have there. Got to break the eggs to make the omelette. My few thoughts if I may: 1. I'd Keep dedicated pump for each boiler, much simpler to control. 2. If you provide Control valves at each boiler with common pumps, you will have problems during staging, the sooner...

Wet Sprinkler System in TR Rooms ( Transformer Rooms )

I've seen projects with additional wall fire rating for transformer room walls for rooms without sprinklers that maintain the definition of fully sprinklered. Some AHJ will also require wet-pipe system with a shut-off valve and tamper switch outside the room. As all have mentioned here, needs a...

Looking for project data on evaporative cooling and displaced ventilation

That was my first try LittleInch. I already contacted a few vendors for project addresses to no avail. I was hoping mainly for facility managers that may have data to share. You'd be surprised of the number of helpful maintenance folks on this site. By all means, I am not looking for...

Hot Water & Heat Recovery Design

If your main system pump is larger (flow/head) than the HX pump, then it should work. The small pump cannot overcome the larger pump in the decoupler. I have seen such an arrangement with the decoupler barely 12" long and it worked.

Recovery of cooling tower blow down water

with this kind of water use and blow-down, you should look into chemical free Dolphin water treatment system. With Dolphin, you will increase of cycles to 6 to 8 (from 3 to 6) and no chemicals in your system. AND, you can recover and re-use blow-down for other uses such as irrigation. However...

Looking for project data on evaporative cooling and displaced ventilation

Hi folks. I am trying to obtain actual installed project data from buildings using evaporative cooling in the south-west US (New Mexico; Arizona, and southern CA). Ideally, I could use data from projects with the following criterias: 1. Ideal Location: Tucson, AZ, or anywhere nearby with a 65F...

Why use a new steam system vs a hydronic hot water system?

Central plant makes sense in Prisons. Prisons staffs do not want any flame near inmates. Some inmates will bust anything to create trouble, diversion, etc. High temperature water would be even better for a campus type in the cold belt. Even DHW is generated from heat exchangers, not from...

Calculating ROI to Correct Poor Performing Chilled Water System

You need to have a single decoupler piping arrangement (not three). The SCWHP are getting water from other decouplers when other chillers not in use. cost just the same as adding large control valves.

Question on chilled water pipe sizing

Water velocity in pipes should not be less that 1.5 FPS. Less than 1.5 FPS, the water will will not carry air with it, air will not be picked up at highest point or at air separator, which will lead to premature pipe corrosion. Ideal water velocities inside coils so=hold be between 3 and 5 FPS...

Transition from Trace 700 to what?

Trace 700 is really a coil sizing program. Period. It claims that it can do a lot of things, such as modeling UFAD, VRF, chilled beams, etc. It does a lousy job at any simulation. in a LCC, it is even worse. Suggest that you grad energy use from Trace and input into BLCC (free from NIST). Can you...

    Direct-Fired Make-up air IAQ concerns

For such high volume space, CO will be sufficiently diluted. Such spaces have a high level of infiltration. What you should consider in your climate for such a space with high level of infiltration is gas-fired radiant heat, including infra-red heaters. In addition to FTR for pits and offices...

    Hydronic System Differential Pressure

    Makeup Air Unit Required?

On a side note 10,000 MBH, even at 90% efficient at all times, you have 1000 MBH of heat loss through the exhaust stack There are good opportunities to recover a lot of heat from the stack (think boiler stack economizer) to preheat the make-up air.

    Meeting with Architect

In a nutshell, ask about utilities requirements: And probably he has an industrial engineer laying out equipment, he should guide you on what he needs (dust collector? spent fuel? etc.) Another aspect overlooked, in the housing of highly flammable fuels, they should issue a code analysis with a...
