    Engineer goes to Law School

Does your scholarship cover part-time schooling as well? Just asking as many scholarships require a full course load.

    Caterpillar 225 Specifications

I beleive the 225 hydraulic excavator stopped being built in 1991. The new version, would be a 325... but it is over twice the weight, and quite a bit more horsepower. The 322 would be closer to the horsepower of the 225, but the weight is still about twice that of the 225. There are also a...

    Masters Degrees (Structural/Geotechnical)

If Canada is of interest to you, the University of Alberta has a world-renowned geo-technical engineering research department... not as hot on the structural side though. Also, there is currently a huge tunneling project going on right on campus. The city's underground transit train ends on...

Cranfield University (UK) says engineers in short supply...

Rugged, The company I work for has a few sales engineers. They provide enineering services to help sell the product. Often, the position involves data analysis of physical properties; research liasons with the customer's research departments and university research areas; design work of the...

    Economics Question: Capital Expenditure

In mining we break the cost of ownership into two categories, owning and operating costs. Operating costs taking into consideration all the points that IRstuff brought up. Plus, you can consider inputs that must be purchased in order to operate the equipment. For example, your car at home...

    Metric II

I assume you mean 100's of imperial threads.... equalling roughly 115 metric threads.

    Global Warming

We just need a little more journalistic integretiy in the Western world. Technical issues aren't the only area of concern either. Also, I'm not trying to generalize the entire profession. Just some bad apples.

    Dozers towing Haul Trucks

DTGT2002, These are off-highway trucks. We have the widest tires we can fit on them as technology allows. Executnr, We've developed a solution, but your input would be helpful and appreciated. I had setup the following relationship: Usable Pull > Rimpull > Effective Resistance Usable Pull...

    Dozers towing Haul Trucks

Thanks for the clarification KRS. Just used donkey and cart for illusrative purposes.... which isn't all that illustrative when I think about it... unless the cart had a small engine in it and the donkey was just helping the cart through some rough stuff.

    Dozers towing Haul Trucks

KRSServices, We are examining the possibility of increasing the payload of the trucks by having a tractor (dozer) pull the trucks at the front. We are examining large scale machines, but I hope the physical principles remain the same regardless if you were using a donkey and a cart.

    Dozers towing Haul Trucks

Grouser, Good idea... a staging area would make a decent plan, except we are looking at 5000-8000 tons of material coming off of a face every hour. There are massive bucket wheel type excavators available that would accomplish just the thing you are talking about, at the production rates we...

    Dozers towing Haul Trucks

Thank you for all the input so far, it's helping me to clarify the problem. Like DRC1 says, we can't really push the trucks because the dozer would likely damage the tires or the frame of the machine... sort of out of design specs. We haven't examined the geo-textile fabric with gravel, but I...

    Dozers towing Haul Trucks

Hello fellow earthmovers, I'm hoping to glean off some expertise if anyone has experience with the following: We have a problem with haul trucks getting stuck in soft material.... or their tires spinning out as the truck starts up in the soft material at the loading area. We have limited the...

    Products that prick your conscience

We are talking about certain industries that are driven by customer/consumer wants and desires. Who creates those desires? Society isn't full of level headed engineers, most of the population can be persuaded, and with billions of dollars sunk into psycologists turned marketers, desires are...

Estimating truck yardage to placed yardage

If you can measure strut pressures on the trucks before and after loading, some sort of sensor tied to the ECM and the ability to download or monitor the values going in, you should be able to get a pretty accurate weight measurement. It would be nice if these low cost sensors were an industry...

    Products that prick your conscience

True enough, anything can be used with an intent to harm. But what about products designed to harm. I think this discussion is meant to revolve more around those products. Weapons engineering is big business. There are probably other things that I can't think of that are designed to harm or...

What is the point of Globalisation?

xnuke, The situation you describe would occur (it's sometimes funny how the natural laws of science can apply to global economics, thanks for pointing that out) if there were no barriers to the flow of wealth or resources or energy; however you'd like to describe it. Unfortunatley, or...

    Rolling Resistance for Earthmoving Vehicles

Thank you for the input. The conditions tarsandman describes are the same pitfalls I'm running into. Rolling resistance can be so variable.... because there are so many variables that influence it, go figure. When production hasn't started and you are trying to predict what the rolling...

What is the point of Globalisation?

Globalization is creating an unfair playing field in the world market. It's like setting up a race between Micheal Schumacher in his Ferrari and yourself in your Toyota Camry, he has the skills and resources to just keep pulling further and further away from you. There's no way Euro/North...

    Influencing Young Engineers

JPattern, I agree with you completely that sometimes people will just tune out and not actually 'get' the point that you are trying to describe. But, do you think having them repeat it back can be a little patronizing though? Is the mentor/protege relationship meant to be like parent/child...
