Use light gauge steel joists when replacing old rotten/damaged/eaten away wood. Light gauge does not rot, it does not attract any insects, it is light and strong at the same time.

If you ask a Structural Engineer, a flag pole IS a structure, as
(a) it resists applied (wind) loads by transfering them to the point(-s) of support and

I agree with JAE. For very long buildings, however, I would incorporate expansion joints and have an X-brace installed in each building section. The same goes for long crane runways. The length of each section is determined by the amount of the expected movement and the expansion joint type. No...
