Calculating power consumption from knowing suction & disch. pressures

TDH = (Disch. psi - Suct. psi) x 2.31 ft/psi Horsepower is approximately (GPM X TDH) / 4000 (for water) tstead is right about the impeller diameter. If your pump runs at 3500 rpm, the head will be 4 times what it was at 1750 rpm (head is proportional to speed squared)

I am hitting a road block here and

Don't forget that the delta-p should be less than 10% of the absolute pressure or the pipes will choke. Do you have welded or screwed joints? Threads leak (by definition)

    Water Hammer

How about http://www.omega.com/techref/waterhammer.html ? or a water hammer calculator at http://www.haywardindustrial.com/whc/ps01.htm

    Steam quality from a boiler

Very interesting discussion. What is the steam used for? If it is only for process use, the normal boiler discharge of 99.5% quality should be OK if your header trapping stations are properly designed (big connections to prevent the condensate from "flying over" the drip pot)...

    Centrifuge Emissions

We have a bottom drop centrifuge, 60" dia x 30" depth. The feed is an aqueous slurry. The operator opens the inspection port to watch the feed distribute on the basket. Some of the feed material splashes out of the port. Speed is about 600 rpm. I want to design a ventilation system...

    Calculating NPSH

Gauge pressure is the pressure measured ABOVE atmospheric pressure. Absolute pressure is the total pressure (gauge + atmospheric.) Atmospheric pressure at sea level is about 14.7 psia. Vapor pressure of any liquid is a function of temperature. Vapor pressure of water is 0.122 psia at 40°F...

Any good piping websites out there??

Don't forget to leave room for the mechanic to drain the filter can and replace the filter element. If the process runs all the time, you may need 2 filters and 3-way valving to allow 1 filter in use and 1 filter on cleaning/standby.

    weirs

Cameron Hydraulic Data, 18th Ed (1995), page 2-10 has a table on Discharge From Rectangular Weir with End Contractions. If the length of the weir opening is 4 to 8 times the weir height, and the height measurement is made 6 ft back from the weir, you can just read the table.

    Pump Air Bubble

Air is more soluble in cold water than it is in hot water. This is the principle behind the boiler deaerator. Heating the water drives off the air. Your pipe is a cooler. Hot water with entrained air enters the cooling loop and collects at the first 180 degree bend. After that, the...

    Micromotion Coriolis Mass Flow Meters

MicroMotion does not publish quantitative data on allowable vibration. However, the sensor instruction manual, section 3, mounting, does give pipe support guidlines, and the names of 2 companies that make vibration isolators. Most chemical plants do not have high ambient vibration, unless you...

Diesel Vapor Lock - Vapor Pressure?

From the MSDS sheets: Sun Oil 1.6mmHg @ 70F Amerada-Hess 0.5mmHg @ 70F Fisher Scientific 2.6mmHg @ 122F (50C) #2 fuel oil is a petroleum distillate ranging from 26 to 34 degrees API specific gravity. The vapor pressure will be a range of numbers, not a nice constant...

    pipe routing - I'm a rookie (bio-pharm)

Equipment Design Handbook for Refineries and Chemical Plants, Volume 2 has a good chapter on piping design, routing, stress analysis, etc. Author is Frank L Evans, Jr. Published by Gulf Publishing Company, Houson, but their book division was taken over by Butterworths, and Amazon.com lists it...
