    SpaceX Starship missions

And it floated for a while after splashdown. Tail up, but I guess that's not surprising? Some kind of explosion at splashdown, but dumping three engines at operating temperatures into ocean water could have caused fuel-carrying things to rupture? With the successful catch of superheavy and two...

Hi Friends. I am building a brakin

The car drums do have some self-energising built in, but shouldn't self-lock if you grab too hard then release, for example. Design/fab so you can change/adjust the mechanical advantage on applying the master cylinder. Then once you can conduct some tests, you can adjust the leverage as needed...

What is this thing attached to the gearbox?

"thing"? you mean the square housing? I'd guess it has some control or monitoring stuff. If you are really curious, hunt down some docs on the vehicle(?) and look for clues. of course, if we knew what equipment this is part of, we might be able to venture a better guess. Jay Maechtlen...

compensating for increased CO2 - methods?

How much solar input would have to be intercepted or re-radiated to compensate for increased greenhouse gases? For example? what happens if we put some huge reflective panels in L2? (thinking aluminized mylar or equivalent) Earth's projected area is about 11.9 million square miles. What percent...

    Alef flying car

Quite impressive. The articulation to get all that stuff stowed into the roadgoing configuration is pretty cool. I wonder how much crosswind it can tolerate when changing configurations? Jay Maechtlen http://www.laserpubs.com/techcomm

The ejection seats on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighters are faulty...

" The military had tested 2,700 F-35 ejection seat cartridges and discovered three failures as of Wednesday," so a random/lot check could have missed it. Jay Maechtlen http://www.laserpubs.com/techcomm

    Engine designs that have problems

Mazda rotaries - we had an RX3, a 1973 or '74? Ran great, not super powerful but pretty peppy. Wouldn't quite do 80 mph over the top of Cajon Pass. (picked up one of my brothers at LAX, accidentally drove most of the way home in 2nd gear before I noticed. Yes we were on the freeway) At 80k miles...

    Engine designs that have problems

and that 'wizard' that whines about the Triton 3v - how about you flush the dang thing out, replace the parts that are actually bad, and run the sucker? And his usual customers will probably keep them maintained, so the issue will probably not recurr. I wonder if you could connect an oil supply...

    Engine designs that have problems

The Honda CB750 used a cam chain follower - it had the same spring loaded thing where you'd loosen a lock bolt to let it adjust, then re-tighten. re the mentioned engine above - 80k km seems like an absurdly short lifespan for a cam chain. I wonder if that is a misquote or a misunderstanding...

    Amada FO-NT shuttle

I wonder if Amada might have a roster of those machines, where they are? Other than that, maybe used machinery dealers? Jay Maechtlen http://www.laserpubs.com/techcomm

    The ignition switch?

Sometimes the ecu will disable the electronic throttle on brake application. That annoys people like me who sometimes want both applied for fine control or fast response. I suspect that disabling throttle when braking at speed would be reasonable, in a way that would intercept /disable any...

    Transmission failures

Since the ecm/computer tunes operational parameters on how the thing is driven, it has learned that it needs to shift harder for you? How long ago was that? perhaps it will revert to previous behavior after a while? Jay Maechtlen http://www.laserpubs.com/techcomm

    The ignition switch?

ecu controlling starter - I hadn't thought of that, but my 03 Regal was definately hard-wired fron ign switch through the neutral safety switch to the solenoid. The wire is probably 10 gauge. My 2016 Impala Limited is definately ecu controlled, because I can twitch the key and it will crank for...

Correct air intake pipe size for 4x4 snorkel ?

The airflow is proportional to actual horsepower generated - I wouldn't think you'd be doing max power while fording, bur ??? maybe sometimes. When the exhaust system is cooled by immersion in water you will probably get less boost pressure. (cooler exhaust to turbo) I can't see that being a big...

batch conversion of CANBUS logged data

well, if you are up for some programming, here's s description of the file format, and comments that Matlab has an API https://maxwell.ict.griffith.edu.au/spl/matlab-page/matfile_format.pdf "Most MATLAB users do not need to know the internal format of a MAT-file. Even users who must read and...

    Sheet metal die cost reduction

I intended to add to the post - The distance from the rectangular holes to the step could be a real issue for hard tooling. But possibly a punch/die for a single rectangle, and punch each hole individually. Have a fixture to rotate the disk into each position. Punch, index, repeat. Mor tooling...

    Sheet metal die cost reduction

You could form the step portion, then laser cut the rectangular holes then the inside and periphery. Fixture it with the outer flange 'up' so the laser can reach the inner edge of the rectangles. There could be some damage to the side of that vertical section when cutting the rectangles -...

    Amada laser conditions settings

Japanese - that suggests it was a gray market machine. I wonder if the control can be converted somehow to the US/North America ROMS /language. I suppose the keyboard is also non-English? Other than those 'little' problems it may be very similar to the LC667-II that was marketed in the US for...

2 dead in Tesla accident "Noone wasdrivingthe car"

"In California, unless you're driving a truck over a certain size or towing a trailer, you're allowed to drive in whichever lane you wish as long as you're not holding-up the normal flow of traffic." Not precisely - the left land is a passing lane. You can legally travel in it when traffic...

2 dead in Tesla accident "Noone wasdrivingthe car"

Putting out a ordinary gasoline car is non-trivial too, as there are so many things that can explode or launch projectiles. The old bumper absorbers, all the gas struts, the air bags, etc. Plus all the interior is combustible, even aside from the fuel tank. Basically you protect surrounding...
