    Mysterious New York Odor

If it were almonds, i would say cyanide. Who knows....... I saw it on Fox this morning and was wondering myself.

    PE or Not PE

Steve, I have heard of it both in Oklahoma and Texas. You are legal to call yourself an engineer in those two states (maybe others) when you identify that you are working for a firm or company that has a certificate of Authorization (or in Texas under their exempt industries).

    Long Commute

Long commutes are unethical both to the familly, employer, and your own body. MOVE!!!! Find a job where there is fun stuff to do after work such as snow skiing, hunting, fishing, or playing a sport such as baseball. Enjoy life and live it. What good are the $$ if you aren't living. Just...

"electrical and computer engineering have to lowest dollar value claims made against them but" They may have the lowest dollar claims because most people never realize or see what happens when one of their systems fail. It may be poor programming that allows identity theft, or mis-routing of a...

    working for a third party

Well, I bet a lot of these engineers do not have Proffesional Licenses, and the contracting companies do not have a Certificate of Authorization from the State Boards to offer engineering to other companies. :) Just report the contractors and their companies to the Board. :)

Please give me some advice as FE exam is approaching

If you run into a question that you know will take and hour or two to answer, skip it for the easier questions until you have answered all of the 3-5 minute questions. If you are about to run out of time on the test, guess or make logical guesses (elliminating totally wrong ansewers in wrong...

    PE or Not PE

This link will take you to FAQ's about PE licenses for each state in the US. It is very informative. http://www.ncees.org/licensure/licensing_requirements_2005/survey_e.pdf#24 A lot of people make assumptions about industrial exemptions when a lot of states don't have them.

The problem with some in the telecom world is they forget that anything (gravity, electrical loadings, earthquakes, ect...)exists outside of their piece of equipment and configuring it. I have replaced alarm equipment in a flood prone area where the equipment was placed underneath the floor...

Rick you beat me to the post. I have seen those issues first hand too many times. The someone with only some technical training tends to think that they know everything while the engineers acknologes they only know a specialised area in a vast sea.

    Rebuilding New Orleans

The big end of flooded NO except for the Port areas should be bulldozed in and signed over to Ducks Unlimited for wildlife habitat.

Angelo Those microsoft guys aren't engineers. I work with plenty of them. They won't be engineers until they start taking into concideration of the HVAC loading, power cable sizing, infrastructure, and ect that their equipment is housed in. They should be called Microsoft IT Certified rather...

    Experience for PE License

Some companies call these positions Field Engineer.

    The saga of Ed Turner

Lets not forget that Mr. Turner was in a highly political situation. Who knows what else was going on in the buddy-buddy situation of a small city govornment. The head guy was creating positions and appointing people ahead of Mr. Turner who did not have any engineering background. The same...

    The saga of Ed Turner

Probably best to print out the laws and explain the whole situation without being confrontational at first. The non-engineers would need to report directly to Mr. Turner, and make changes per Mr. Turner's direction. How would one go about this situation where the whole organization is not...

    The saga of Ed Turner

My grandpa who grew up in a very rough town used to always say "Watch out for the young kid, or the old man, either one of them will stab you in the back in a New York Minute. YOu can come more trusting the middle age guy who has a familly at home to feed." Mr. Turner was near retirement and...

How can I get the attention from the hiring companys?

When I graduated college, I tried the mass mailings of resume's to every job opening in the paper, and many phone calls. I had much better luck and several job offers by just getting out and dropping in cold to businesses meating with engineer's one-on-one at small businesses and engineering...

    The saga of Ed Turner

Thats what I was wondering, but I bet in many states an engineer would have to do the same thing as Mr. Turner.

How can I get the attention from the hiring companys?

The past six years, the oil industry was kaputz. Now in the last 3 months things are booming. You only need to move to Oklahoma or Texas, and there are many oppurtunities, especially if you don't mind being away from home for extended periods of time. Your background would be well suited...

"IRstuff (Aerospace) 18 Oct 05 1:59 Rug Doctors have no degrees whatsoever. There's no confusion here and no one is offering cut-rate surgery at the local Rug Doctor. Likewise, there's no confusing an MCSE for a "real" engineer. They couldn't possibly offer nor perform ANY electrical, civil...

"And they solve actual problems. A little too close to actual engineering work...." They are more like technicians. They program routers and internet equipment. They don't size power cables, worry about designing the HVAC systems, worry about structural loading of their cables, worry about...
