If your file is 3d you need to be looking from the top while in view 1 key in to the keyin browser vi=top
if so try using 2 d file first and try your drawing technique again.. if you can see stuff ok then its your placing objects with awkward z values for the 2d length to show up....
create a dgn eg mycell.dgn with your seed file then in explorer rename mycell.dgn to mycell.cell
and you will now have a empty cell library call mycell
now you use the model copy model etc to make additional cell within the cell library or use the traditional old school pre v8 method...
Ok now I see whats going on ... what you'll have to do is create a macro that loads your funtionkey.mnu from your hard drive the one that works thru ustn as it still works when you don't run pwise so you should still be able to load fkey menu manually and if you can then you can load it...

You could force the printer.plt to have a prefered preference set as the default paper size selected...

Bentley now market Inroads for both Autocad and Microstation it will do exactly what you want and it has a GUI interface and commands ....
You can also get MX for autocad and it does what you want but it uses script files and you need to write a few yourself... personally I prefer the GUI...
under utilities > data cleanup
select delete duplicates function and away it goes..
but they must be real exact duplicates ie lines exactly ontop of lines
you can batch plot no problem from inside one file just make sure you tick the multiple boundries box
another tip is to set up your title block- drawing sheet to have a unique out side boundary as a sepparate element on its own level ie sheetboundary ( level name) or the old level 63 but only...
you need to work in 3d as you used to in solid works and from the 3d tools you can create cross sections..that is if your talking about sections through solids like in mechanical drafting but if you mean civil, like profiles of roadways etc then use the microstation addon called Inroads or...
I don't think there is anyway to control this but why do you need to restring it in illustrator?
What work flow is it that you do anything in illustrator that you couldn't do in microstation first. After all it just becomes a picture for printing once it has become a pdf?

only fast way I know..in microstation is
you have to rebuild the contour file by creating a dtm in Inroads.. then remake trh contours in 3d and create the text lables too if you want.
other way is to save as autocad then ask acad guys to repolygonise the whole selection I belive this makes...
you can do this in several ways.
The first is to set your works space preferences to a primary search path see attached prefs1.jpg
Another way is to set up a specific workspace and then when you open Microstation manager you choose the workspaces by name thru browsing down the workspaces...
I'm not sure exactly how to achieve what you want but when I use the batch processor, if I apply any commands to a series of selected files then ustn just opens and closes them automatically as it processes each file one at a time.
