Use of the word "engineering" in company name

zdsa04 I'm in Ontario, Canada. BigH Ontario only requires a P.Eng in the company if you offer any kind of services to the public which could compromise public safety in general. Another example is the design of a small utility trailer for carrying home 2 x 4's , although not an engineering...

    Ridiculous interview questions

StompingGuy You should have explained to him that if the volume of the brick material was shaped in a certain fashion it could indeed float.[wink] Archimedes was another famous Scot who's name was misspelt over the years. It was really Archie Medes

new employee curious about working conditions

bseejim I agree with corus about moving around from department to department. If your company is large enough for this to happen, it will expose you to many aspects of the business. Where I am, new graduates are routinely moved around...Engineering, Maintenance, Machine Shops, Production etc...

    Need help figuring speed

binfordw Your fpm/pi*dia(ft) is right but 337 rpm is the answer as ccw pointed out. This gives you a total ratio of 8.17:1 for speed reduction. Assuming that this drive is roller chain and sprockets, the largest sprocket you could use on the drive axle would have to be around 8” O.D. as the...

    Should I ask my Boss???????

casseopeia I’m coming into this late with nothing more to add really, but if you have done a little research on this publication and found that is reputable, I don’t see any concern as to things being distorted when it goes to press. I understand your concerns but what is with the Freakmeister...

Where would you like to be?

Does anyone remember the TV show "Route 66" with Martin Milner, George Maharis and Glenn Corbett? And that fantastic Corvette('58 I believe). Years later I drove the whole thing from Chicago to L.A. but cheaated a little on the Interstate because of road repairs.

    Slide Rules. Collecting and discussing.

I only have one. The one I used before calculators and I can't remeber if it is a Staedtler -Mars, Keufell and Esser or Faber-Castell. All I know it was made in Germany and I inherited it from my brother in-law when he suddenly quit engineering. I'll have to get to the box in the basement. I...

casseopeia If you hear someone cheering you on with a thick Scottish brogue, you'll know who it is. metengr If St. Thomas or the US Virgin Islands has the same legislation as Texas, MadMango would happily settle for "garbage man"

Where would you like to be?

My first thought is I would choose Marin County, CA. Most likely Sausalito. The climate is moderate, not too hot in summer and not too cold in winter and as I also like the vibrant atmosphere of a big city when I feel like it, San Francisco is just across the bridge. In my travels, I have...

    Titles: Engineer vs. Designer

EddyC I believe it goes back thousands of years and was derived from the word ingenious or the latin inginium and was adopted as a title for anyone, designers and builders alike who exhibited exceptional skills and craftsmanship in their respective trades. In the later industrial years...

    Titles: Engineer vs. Designer

EddyC To the best of my knowledge, eer , in some cases was simply a suffix to describe ones profession. For instance, in the UK, the locomotive was commonly referred to as the engine and the man who operated this piece of equipment would be the engineer. Oddly enough however, this sees to be...

    Favorite tools

Any tool that is electronic...the HP xw 8000 with dual 3.2 Ghz processors and 3 Gb of ram...no more pencils, erasers (not that I had to use one of those anyway [wink] ). The online catalogues that used to litter my desk in hard form. All my old tools are at home in a box in the basement...

    Titles: Engineer vs. Designer

In Texas I hear it's unlawful to call ones self an engineer unless one is a licensed PE. I wonder if Casey Jones was commiting a Federal offence by using the title while crossing state lines.[wink]

Disciplines where Licensure shall be a Requirement

There will be a few surprised people after reading what I have to say here and you know who you are.[wink] I am not opposed to mandatory licensure in the exempt sector when an individual’s well being and safety is an issue while in, on or around our creations. As was stated by some of the...

    Learn a Language

weh3 is right on with his experience. When you attempt to speak to someone in their native tongue, regardless of how badly, they see that as a courtesy and, if they speak Engish, they are only too glad to help. This even goes I might add in many ethnic neibourhoods in Anytown USA.
