The client had asked for this configuration. I think they even explored the option of a concrete florr on top of the corroded base, but because of expansion issues and the clearance between the concrete and the shell, they opted for the above mentioned config. ThanksMJC...

Why cant one just base the calc on a straight pipe under int press? Just a ridiculous question from my side :)

We normally call up standard lifting lugs according to DIN 28082. What is important though is that the stresses induced during lifting do not exceed the allowable stresses of the shell times 1,5. A WRC 107 analysis should suffice for this.

In South Africa, most Petrochemical Refinery standards will not allow toe to toe welds closer than 50mm apart. I dont think its an ASME requirement, but I'm sure theres a good reason for it. Dave
