Resilient or metal seated gate valves

Is there reason to spec one over the other instead of just life span? The city I am doing work for specs only brass metal seated, but the contractor says that he has never used anything but resilient wedge gate valves...and that they are "better" I have read up on them some, but dont really see...

    pipe flow calc

Sorry for the long time to reply guys, i was out in the field the past couple days. Basically, I just had to go out and watch the dang thing and record two water levels, and then find the change in volume vs. the time it took to raise the level... I know that it comes out low because of water...

    pipe flow calc

right, that would be ideal, but i am not even near it...i told that idea to the guy over the phone and he said that is not possible with the way it is leaking... "Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia." ---Charles Schulz "Beer is living proof...

    pipe flow calc

i have a leaking pipe, all i know about it is size and pressure...i am trying to find the Qout of the leak... so how do i relate the water pressure to a velocity? "Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia." ---Charles Schulz "Beer is living proof...

How to avoid drama at work?

a lot of times the 'drama' can be avoided by smply ignoring it and choosing not to involve yourself.... myself though, i choose to go the 'comedy route' and ultimately have as much fun with it as possible.... or be sooo sarcastic that they catch my drift and leave me alone "Don't worry about...

    Exposed pipe in floodplain

So how do I go about finding who the the floodplain manager is? My boss who is on vacation is the interim city engineer and would probably know, but as stated...he is not here to help. "Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia." ---Charles...

    Aerial Photos

as far as i can tell, i think that google uses early 2007 pics for more developed areas, which is about as accurate as you can find for free. unless youre local government agency has some published...like the dallas/ ft.worth area does here, but even then they are almost identical to google's...

    Exposed pipe in floodplain

This is a continuation of this thread: http://eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=220948&page=1 but the questions have evovled to where they fit into this category more.... Due to the error in part by all, the sewer pipe will be sitting about 3-4" above creek bottom. My main problem now is who do...

    choosing the right field (civil)

lol, yeah, i think that i may be one of those people that overanalyzes things. Definitely doing as much 401k as possible, and trying to save up to get a 'newer' SUV.... thanks guys... "Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia." ---Charles Schulz...

    Connecting pipes of different material

well, the depth change has more to do with a terrible survey. in most cases, they were off by about a foot, but it was close engough for us to use this time, and find a new surveyor. It hasnt eroded away or anything... i think that the surveyors just didt want to get wet.... what are some...

    choosing the right field (civil)

I was always taught to have the 10 year game plan...it kinda like just floating down the river gets you down the river with no paddle. And i am not regretting my decision to start here at all, I know i will be with this company for a while. I guess basically, its just that i know i have so...

    choosing the right field (civil)

I am a recent graduate with a civil bs. I interviewed with many companies and recieved offers from most. I narrowed them down by job type, atmosphere, pay, location, #PEs, hours worked, and the such...it wasnt really until i started my job in the municipal field that i began to wonder if this...

    Connecting pipes of different material

Thanks, talking it over with one of the bosses, i think that we are going to put a manhole on the other side of the creek. I am spec'ing to reinforce the embankments, and then encase the DI pipe in another steel pipe because there will be a joint exposed (code spec'd)....it is going to raise...

    Connecting pipes of different material

The local codes do not require one, i have checked those very thoroughly. The TCEQ does not require one either, but i recommended to put a manhole there and we will see where that goes. tnboy, i apologize for my own ignorance...the 949 PVC pipe may not be a real designation, that is just what...

    Connecting pipes of different material

thats more of what i feel comfortable with, but at this point....it seems that other people's main goal is to do this job with as little added cost as possible...within code,

    Connecting pipes of different material

I have a 24" line that I am running under a creek. under the creek, i am required to use DI. I want to tie in to a 24" line that is 949_PVC on the other side of the creekbed. TCEQ (Texas Commission on Environmental Quality) madates that a manhole be used when changing direction or moving...

In-place Wood Column - Improve Slenderness

i dont know for sure if you can do that, but i would think bolting it say every 2 or 3 feet would be better than gluing....

    F.E. exam

No way, if you are a civil student, take the civil afternoon portion, there is only general morning. Honestly, the test isnt that hard... but, you need to review pretty much any class that you have taken that you feel is engineering related. The afternoon general would be very hard for a civil...
