John, Cowski,
You guys provided the exact answers I needed! Cowski, the Convert to Independent Detail sure opens up the view to allow snapping during sketching (while breaking the view for automatic updates). John, your explanation of the parent/child relationships of the views completely...
John, Cowski,
Based on your responses I learned something... snapping to parts in Master Model Views seems to only be an issue in Detail Views. No problem with primary, auxillary, and secton views.
The problem has now been boiled down to this... There is no MB3 menu option to make a Detail...
Using NX 9.0.2 Drafting, I need to know how to snap to part entities (i.e. end points) while skecthing in a view based on a 3D part. I know how to do this with pre-NX 8.5 views (steps shown below), but the Extracted Edges representation no longer appears in Settings for Drafting views created in...
John
That was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
I had tried that originally, but had gotten thrown off in the very last step, thinking I had to select an object as requested in the dialog. All I had to do is click OK, then Cancel. Interestingly I had clicked OK, but there was no...
I defined a custom symbol (text entity) within a drawing, and defined the Anchor with Point Dialog, to X=0, Y=0. This portion went fine.
Now I want to insert the symbol (Insert, Symbol, Custom) in another drawing at the coordinates X=0, Y=0, but I cannot find any options to simply type in...
John, thanks for all of your help on this. You have completely answered my question.
Because of the time and design intent savings potential of retained layer info within a symbol (as opposed to inserting one symbol for each "layer" item), I did contact GTAC, and they opened a ER for me.
Scott...
I appreciate the single object aspect of symbols, I am not suggesting anything be done to change that. But if you choose to smash a symbol it makes sense to provide an option to retain the original layer assignments of the items in the symbol.
I could use some direction on "the other tool" to...
Having every NX release since 14 on your machine has its advantages doesn't it :-)
John, would you mind forwarding the PR contents and number when you get a chance?
Many thanks,

Hmm, that is disappointing. I hoped that smashing the symbol would restore it to its original parts (retaining all characteristics, layers, colors, fonts, etc.).
Do you see the advantage of having it work the way I suggest?
Thanks,
Scott

Hi John, it was great getting to see you at Beta!
Anyway, 'Use Definition' is the selection I made originally, but it still swaps out my font when I place the custom symbol instance. How does this test out for you? Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Scott

Is there a way to retain the layer assignments of items in a symbol?
I would like to drop the content of the title block into the drawing using a symbol, but it seems that symbols lose all layer assignments of the items in the symbol.
It looks to me like I would have to make multiple symbols...
If I define a custom symbol with helios font in it, then immediately place an instance of the symbol right in the same drawing, the font reverts to blockfont on the instance (while helios is still evident in the original text note).
It would be great if you (or someone) could try the simple...
I attempted to make a custom symbol as part of our drawing border title block, but I cannot find the magic potion to retain the text font type (chosen to closely emulate our company logo).
When I insert an instance of my custom symbol the helios text font is replaced with blockfont.
Can...
