dear IceBreaker, thx for your answers
then I am confused as to the terminologies of stiff in FEA.
From the document that DanStro posted I quote: "The beam deflects further with finer meshing"
In my weird model the opposite holds true: My model deflects less with finer meshing. Definition of...
I have attached a plot to show what I mean. t stands for number of elements through the thickness, all else being equal.

@IceBreaker,
I am looking at plots of applied force vs tip displacement. The more elements I use through the thickness of the specimen, the more load is measured for the same applied displacement, thus the response is stiffer (steeper plot).
Thank you btw.
Dear DanStro,
I do not disagree with IceBreaker, neither do I disagree with you. What both of you wrote is also what I have experienced so far.
But you both have misread my post, or I have not clearly expressed myself. My model behaves the other way around from what you describe:
- Common...
The simple answer: you cannot, at least in no simple manner.
It is possible with VCCT and it might be with xFEM. Search for "low-cycle fatigue" in the manual. In any case it would require some hard to get material parameters and in the case of VCCT prior knowledge of the crack path. Its no...
Dear all,
I have a peculiar case in which the exact opposite happens from what is expected. I am modelling crack propagation using cohesive elements. In the beginning I am just modelling a mixed-mode bending test in plane strain to calibrate my model parameters. The model is bending dominated...
I am working on a crack propagation problem using cohesive elements with Abaqus Implicit Newton-Raphson algorithm. It says in the manual that viscous regularization should be applied to the cohesive elements to help with convergence. The viscosity guarantees that the tangent stiffness matrix is...
How do I model a piece of rope which does not elongate under load, and has no bending stiffness. How should I define the part, what elements to chooose and what constraints to put?
Is there something like an element selection guide for beginners? If you know something like it, I would be very greatful if you would share.
As a student I got a whole lot of Abaqus assignments thrown at me without ever having had any classes. Choosing the right elements is a big sticky point...
Are you using the keyword editor? It makes it a littles easier. Please copy paste your keywords for the file in which you want to have imperfections so we can take a look.
If been there too, it takes a little trial and error. As with so many thigs in abaqus, a good reference example is nowhere...
I do not get such an error. If I look into the msg file, yes, it says negative eigenvalue WARNING, no more. I'd like abaqus to tell me indeed which freedoms are unconstrained.
Abaqus finds solutions even when not all DOFs of the body are constrained. Apparently it sets constraints on its own to guarantee a solution. What I want is Abaqus to tell me, warn me, or allow me to check which DOFs, or RBMs are not constrained.
I designed various parts in Catia v5 and put them together in the assembly work bench. Its a fairly large assembly so I use various subassemblies.
When I made changes on a certain subassembly or a part, CATIA seams randomly to disregards changes or even undo them. This Monday I open the...
Thanks for the answers so far.
I am rather new to Abaqus, so I don't know what that means to include RISK or NLGEOM (click on where?)
What I did so far is applying the load and in the next load step releasing it.
So what should I do to check for buckling?
I am modelling a thin plate-like structure which is statically loaded and deforms plastically. I then assume the load is taken off and Abaqus shows me the (expected) residual stresses. Now I would like to know if and how the structure buckles due to these residual stresses. How should I go about...
