In reference to my unanswered threads, any proffessional opinions out there are very welcome. I am assessing the weld stress/strength when subjecting the fittings to a tensile force of 17 tons. The fittings are SOW type joints with double fillet weld. The welds are magnetic particle inspected. ASME VIII in section UW-12 suggests joint efficiency of .55 when no radiographic examination has been performed for this joint type.

Question: 1)What joint efficiency should I use for MPI?
2)Is UW section of ASME VIII where I should be looking for this weld design/stress/joint type assessment?
3) Are these joint types catagory C according to ASME VIII.
4)Section UW-18 fillet weld page 128 (d) of ASME VIII equation Allowable load=weldarea*yeildstress of weldbasematerial*E(efficiency) be used for this application tension test.

Any help comments thank you.

Regards

UW-12 is only for seams, not openings or fittings. UW-15 & 16 address fittings, but are there to provide weld sizing not strength calculations. Any welding engineering book can provide formulas, the Section VIII solution is to provide minimum weld sizes based on vessel wall.

ASME: Always-Sometimes-Maybe-Except
PED: Pain Every Day

Thank you for the reply. I don't seem to be getting much response on this topic these days. Would there be any suggests to joint efficiencies out there.

Should I just assume joint efficiency of 1 for MPI method??
