2205 Pipe HT-0

A supplier is offering SA-790 S31803 (2205) pipe "with no heat treat (HT-0)". This is for Sec VIII, Div 1 use.

SA-790 requires all pipe to be furnished in heat-treated condition.

If using this pipe, the fabricator will be responsible for final heat treat and resulting mechanical properties, no?

It is the fabricator's responsibility to send this spec deviation to the design engineering firm or client for approval before proceeding with fabrication.

And, yes, you will be assuming the liability for the mechanical properties of the material after your heat-treatment. In today's legal climate in the USA, I would loudly caution my clients against doint this.

Saving the money on the base material and Heat Treating it yourseld after all the welds are complete makes good engineering sense. In the narrow view, this also makes financial sense. When you look at the Big Picture, the potential liability outweighs the probable gains.

The Owner may elect to take the savings, but make sure that, as the fabricator, you limit your liability to bad fab and PWHT, and exclude bad material.

Hello SnTMan,
1) In my opinion it would be a mistake to accept pipes SA-789 # S31803 without Heat Treatment and a Non-conformity to ASME 2 Part A Table 1 requiring a Heat Treatment of 1020-1100 °C .
The required Heat Treatment can not be done after welding...

2) Remark : After Welding neither ASME 8 div.1 nor ASME 1 require PWHT for Base Metals family P10H-1 .
