2nd Motorway bridge collapse in just over four months in Italy kills couple

If you look at the still in the video, it looks like there was construction taking place at the time of the failure. It is just me or is the road excavated at both ends of the bridge approach.

Yes, it was under construction. It looked to be in very poor condition. The operator of the autostrada told Italian news agency Ansa that a temporary structure supporting the bridge had collapsed.

In most applications like this, the bridge is replaced. Don't understand how they were lengthening the bridge.

Collapse of temporary support structure are far too common. Its usually due to the contractor wanting to save a buck.
