Which of these two designations is correct? Right now my coworker and I differ in how we designate these in item descriptions and we need to standardize.
The majority of our descriptions use 316SS as well as most of the product brochures for 3rd party components.
Thanks for you assistance,
Louis

I do not know which is right but
would prefer not to see a space
for alphabetization purposes.
You might try a search on the web
and see which gives the most
results.

Neither one is adequate to specify the material. Reference should be made to actual specifications like an internal company one or consensus standards like ISO or ASTM. Also, details on testing plans should be included: how often are chemistry, mechanical properties, etc. tested? how many specimens?

Cory

We are using the UNS # (S31600) to specify the exact material we are using in lower level / more detailed documents. The "generic" name is being used in part descriptions for "sales" documents and this is where we are trying to determine if we use 316SS or 316 SS.

Niether designation is correct. A proper spec must be indicated. For example ASTM A182-F316 or UNS S31600.

[Designation of Basic Materials]

ASME: SA-240-316/ SA-312 TP316/ SA-182-F316
ASTM: A-240-316/ A-312 TP316/ A-182-F316
UNS: S31600
AISI: Type 316
JIS: SUS 316/ STS 316/ STS 316TP/ STS 316TF

[Designation of Developed Materials]

ASME: SA-240-316L/ SA-312 TP316H SA-182-F316N
ASTM: A-240-316L/ A-312 TP316H/ A-182-F316N
UNS: S31603/ S31609/ S31651
AISI: Type 316L/ Type 316H/ Type 316N
JIS: SUS 316N/ STS 316L/ STS 316H TP/ STS 316H TF

Both designations are not come from Standards and Codes. But 316SS or 316 SS have been used for the simplified designation in the industries and scientific articles during last several decades. 316 SS is more preferable to avoid the confusing from the designation of developed classes (e.g., L, H, N, LM, S, ELC, ULC, Cb, Ti, Mo, Se, LMN, F, etc.)
