3D Sketch Pipe - Fixture 1

I have been tasked to create a FIT CHECK Fixture for a 3D Sketched Pipe (similar to the attached pic). What I did was create a circular sweep along the 3D Sketch path, but they are in need of a U-Channel groove. When I try this, the U-Channel rotates when following the path. I need the path to be constant so I can drop in the pipe below flush for check.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

artnmotion,

For starters, go back and and read up on pipe fittings. The elbows in your model do not look realistic. This can affect your fixture.

To control the rotation of your fixture, you need construction geometry. Add planes. Add construction lines to your 3D[ ]sketch.

You may create additional 3dSketch planes within your 3d Sketch which may be used to draw a 2d internal sketch in the 3d sketch feature. These may be hidden separately from standard planes and will all hide if you hide the 3d sketch itself.

You can sweep a line along the path as a reference surface to use as a guide curve for a reference Horizontal to use as U shape direction. Or do it as a lofted feature using derived sketch functionality so that any changes are propagated to the other derived sketch. To place a derived sketch select an existing sketch (The "U shaped one") along with plane to place it on and the Insert Derived Sketch command will become available to you. Once the derived sketch is placed it can only be rotated not modified to prevent you from adding additional entities. If you edit the original Driving Sketch any items added will also be added to the derived ones.

With a loft you can define two or more profiles to use allowing you better control over the shape as it goes along the feature guide path.

You can easily use the weldments feature to create a pipe like the following picture. I don't use sweep to do it because sweep is more complicated. If you just want a pipe or solid beam, you will find weldments is a good choice.

Besides, you don't have to draw a 3D sketch to draw the line. You can use two 2D-sketch, just need to create some datums or planes.
