Why do the military uses 400hz in weapon systems?

I doubt that it is classified; same reason that 400Hz is used on aircraft - size and weight.

A machine output is proportional to volume (and hence weight) x speed. Higher the speed(or frequency), lower the weight for a given output.

As David says most military equipment uses 400 Hz to reduce the weight of the magnetic components.

All true statements but not the reason, at least not on submarines.

Higher frequencies are easier to magnetically screen, and a fair few weapons are designed for 400Hz power including torpedoes. Also the acoustic noise of 400Hz equipment doesn't travel so well under water compared to 50 / 60Hz.

It is best not to mention scottys name anymore.....

He's probably being extraordinarily rendered at this moment. And it's all dreman's fault. [sadeyes]

..probably with 400Hz strapped to his nethers..;-)

When you build weapons using 400Hz, they do more Hurts to the target... [2thumbsup]

Folks!!!!
I'm realy worry!!!! Where is Scotty????
Scotty, please send us some messages.

What have you guys done with my hubby?? He was taken away by the men in the black helicopter after talking to you lot about submarines... what does he know about submarines and torpedoes?! He works in a power station!
