Hi all,

As the title suggests I'm looking into welding 42CrMo4V forgings (approx. 930 MPa SMYS) for an offshore actuator. I've seen to repeatedly referred to as equivalent to AISI 4140 yet the SMYS seem wildly different!

I'm struggling to find any information on this material, particularly regarding welding. Variables I'm interested would be:
Min preheat / max Interpass
Heat input restrictions
PWHT holding temp / time
Any other special welding requirements

Any information would be much apricated!

Are you requesting for information about 42CrMoV or 42CrMo4V? As long as I know, AISI 4140 is 42CrMo and there is no vanadium addition.

I do have some technical literature on welding 42CrMo, but they all focus on welding specifications for dissimilar materials.

Take AISI 4140 + S235JR dissimilar welding for example. The literature states:

Minimum preheat temp.: 300°C
Inter-pass temperature shall be not less than preheat temperature.
Root pass welding variables: Current:180~220A, Voltage: 19-22V; Inter-pass welding variables: 240-300A, 19-22V
Welding speed: 30 cm/min
PWHT: tempering: @(607°C±14°C) for 4 hours.

Just for your reference.

What specification Material, Exactly.. and what form/reason/temper for the welding... And for forging repairs or joining as-forged parts... or joining machined parts. etc.

There are lots of unknowns in Your issue.
