I've almost exclusively dealt with 3/4" to 1-1/4" A325 bolts. However, I'm designing some lighter structures where drawings are often calling up 5/8" and 1/2". I acknowledge that there is a difference in magnitude of the forces, however I'm wondering if this is a special request (ie. extra charge) to have these smaller bolt sizes.

Do any of you use 5/8" and 1/2" bolts frequently? Maybe I should just contact the local fabricator.

This reads like such a silly question. But it is the product of working in the design world, switching to the fabrication world, and then coming back. All of a sudden all the little connection details start popping out.

even if this mightn't be a pennyworth ;-) (??not directly linked to the question),
you might want to check for
- minimum bolt sizes as per standard
- allowed distances bolt/bolt and bolt/edge
- max no. of bolts in a row

1/2" and 5/8" A325 bolts were extremely common and readily available at my last employer (sign structures). 5/8" A490 bolts were also available.

We did run into a few instances where another engineer would specify 1/2" A490 bolts and the availability of those is slim w/o being custom made.

Echoing azcats, 1/2" and 5/8" A35 bolts are commonly used and readily available. We've used them in countless projects.

Although it was a small order, I just had some 5/8 A325's delivered from McMaster Carr for a project and they arrived faster than the pizza I ordered.
