50 hour salt spray test on Stainless Steel 1

Hi All,

We want to manufacture Stainless Steel Hex Nut. These nuts are to be used in sanitary ware like sink drain plug siphon. Can you suggest a Stainless Steel Grade which can pass 50 hours Salt Spray Test & has no magnetic absorption. Any SS grade cheaper than SS 304 which can pass our requirement? Awaiting your reply.

Type 304 with between 8.0 and 10.5% nickel helps it take the abuse in all types of environments. See the linked article:

SS 304 is a good option. We want explore a cheaper option.

If I make the nuts from SS 301, can it pass 50 hours Salt Spray Test & has no magnetic absorption ?
 
If you keep the Ni high then it will not be magnetic, if you use standard 304 and cold work it will be noticeably magnetic.
Less expensive? the only options are 2xx alloys, most of which have poorer corrosion resistance and get more magnetic.
I am not familiar with the cold work transformations of 210LN, 202, 204, or 205.
I am sure that you can look this info up.

Type 301 is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel. This alloy is non-magnetic in the annealed condition, but becomes magnetic when cold worked. Nuts are usually produced with cold working.

Type 301 would probably work well in normal service but may not pass the 50 hours Salt Spray Test.

Is Type 301 less expensive? That depends on the price of chromium and nickel at the time of purchase.
 
Type 201 can be more stable than 304 if made with sufficiently high Mn and N content. And, again, with high enough Cr and N, it will have rough equivalence in corrosion resistance. The savings are minimal, however.

Too bad about the requirement for non-magnetism, 439 would pass the corrosion, improve machinability, and be significantly cheaper.
