A mathematician has received £820,000 ($1.67 million) for a mathematical proof that may lend circumstantial evidence to the existence of God.

I must be quite dumb because I dont get it, the winning theory "introduces doubt about the material existance of the world around us". Prior to this had the clever minds of the world managed to remove all doubt?
