A182 F51 forging Heat treatment

F51 duplex is heat-treated in accordance with NORSOK M630 (MDS D44).
It was quenched in water.Transit time from furnace to quenching tank is within 60 seconds.
Water is circulated and monitoring of water in place, well below +40 deg.C.
Customer further request monitoring record of Halogen content % in quenching water.

Is water quality critical and has impact to the overall quality of F51 forging ?
Halogen content in water got to monitored ? Which compliance standard to follow as NORSOK does not have such requirement.
From metallurgical point of view, how does it, halogen % correlate to quality of forging F51 ? Is it corrosion issue ?

Appreciate advise from expert.

I don't think this is an issue with duplex forgings. Maybe P91 steel would be important but not duplex stainless.

Hi CTTEE,

ASME BPV and piping codes restrict chlorine content to 50ppm max in the potable water used for hydrotest. Same requirement is also specified in mnay manufaturers and end users' spec for BPV and pressure piping. I would think your client is having those requiremenst at the back of their minds.

50ppm of chlorine may not harm DSS at all. However chlorine above those limits may harm the associated components related to quenching , say water tanks and piping etc. Hence using water with a safe chlorine content would be a good idea.
