Back in high school, I took Vo/tech electronics. I learned the mnemonic devices mentioned here, but the instructor also presented a strange method I've never heard of since.
Instead of memorizing a string of words starting with BBROYG...., this system associated each color directly with a number. This way, to find green, for example, you don't have to think "B, B, R, O, Y, G" and count 1-5.
Black is NO color - nothing, zero
Brown, think brow-ONE.
Red, think TWO red lips.
Orange, think "orange tree" tree rhymes with three.
Yellow, think Yell FOUR help.
Green, think of a green FIVE dollar bill
Blue, think "sick (six) and blue"
Violet, think "violet clouds in heaven, rhymes with SEVEN.
Grey, thing Gray-EIGHT (great)
White, think of white wine, rhymes with NINE
A couple of those are a real stretch, but the whole thing was so silly that I found myself remembering the color codes that way - despite the fact that I thought it was stupid at the time.
