Adding a second receiver/storage tank to an existing air compressor

Hello,

Is it possible to add a second air receiver tank to an existing air compressor, tank setup? The existing compressor also has a refrigerated dryer.

The only reason I thought of why not is having an air dryer downstream of the storage tanks. With 2 tanks, the instantaneous flow may increase.

Most plant air / instrument air systems have a PCV downstream of the dryer to maintain constant supply pressure to users, so it is not likely that average air flow through the dryers will increase with the additional buffer vessel. However, it is not clear why you need an additional buffer tank. Is it because you want to ride out a longer duration power failure without losing instrument air pressure to the plant?

If you're having air pressure problems then it would be better to increase the storage downstream of the dryer.

It is not uncommon to place a second storage vessel at a point furthest away from the compressor, in large facilities where machines demand large quantities of air for short durations. If the air delivered is dried, before placing in the airline then you should not need a second dryer.
