Hi,
I am being supplied a 10NPS class 300# RF weld neck flange made from F61 SA-182 UNS32550. Looking trough the code I can see the material is listed in SA182, Section II Part A. However it is not listed in Section II Part D or B16.5 2020 Edition.
The assembly will be registered as a H fitting (in British Columbia, Canada) designed to B31.3. In B31.3 para 323.1.2 states:
" Unlisted materials may be used provided they conform to a published specification covering chemistry, physical and mechanical properties, method and process control, and otherwise meet the requirements of this code. See also ASME BPV Code Section II, Part D, Appendix 5. Allowable stress shall be determined in accordance with the applicable allowable stress basis of this Code or a more conservative basis."
From my understanding of this, the material UNS32550 is known so this ticks the box for the first sentence of this paragraph. I am also getting a Certified Material Test Report (CMTR) from the supplier of the flange which will show the chemistry and stress values.
So to get this fitting passed would I be able to carry out calculations for the flange using material SA-240 UNS32550, as this material is listed in Section II Part D. B31.3 allowables are higher so ASME Section II part D allowables is more conservative (which would tick the box for the last sentence of para 323.1.2).
How would I go about passing this material/ design with Technical Safety BC? Is it just a matter of submitting the calculations for the flange using the stress values of SA-240 and highlighting the assumptions made in the calculations?
Any help or direction would be appreciated.
