AISC 13 th Construction Manual (Table 10-9) 1

Dear All,

please check the attachment as i have marked in red the last point of the limitations mentioned for the table 10-9 in AISC 13 constructional manual. By the side i have also attached the section where the boxed are left blank for the cases mentioned above. Can u please help me understand why. Or where it is referenced.

If you read through the commentary before the table, you will see that they limit the plate thickness, t, to db/2 + 1/16" for a single row of bolts to ensure that the plate moment strength does not exceed the moment strength of the bolt group in shear. If you get to that thickness, there's no reason to use a thicker plate as the bolts will fail first anyway so you are wasting steel.

Now i get it. It would be great help if u could specify the where to look at in Commentary. I went through Chapter J but could not find the part where it is discussed.

It is on page 10-103 of my copy of the 13th Edition Manual.
On page 10-104 of the 14th Edition.
