AISC Entering and Tightening Clearances

I have a question regarding structural steel bolting. Do the AISC entering and tightening clearances have to be provided on both the nut and bolt head sides for tightening purposes, or is the clearance for a socket for a 1" diameter bolt tightened from one side, with the head held in place by friction? I have never seen the tightening process performed and am curious.

Thanks.

I assume both the bolt head and the nut must be held by a socket wrench in order to tighten the nut.

Couldn't one side just be held by a standard spud wrench? Then the clearance for that side wouldn't apply

All I know is P/A and Mc/I

The videos I've seen while researching this have almost all been an electric torque wrench on the nut with no apparent or obvious device holding the bolt head. I've got a situation where my tolerances on the bolt head side are tight and certainly won't permit a standard socket, however the opposite side has plenty of room for access.

Balero32:
If the clearance is so tight, can you actually get the bolt in place? Most bolts have to be held in some fashion during the tightening process, or they just tend to spin. You could use Huck Bolts and there is a bolt system with a slot (like a screwdriver slot) in the threaded end of the bolt. The impact driver has an internal tool which fit the slot and holds the bolt while outer part tightens the nut.

azcats: That looks to be what I was thinking of. Tolerances are not so tight that the bolt cannot be installed. The research I've done found some hydraulic operated, low clearance wrenches that will fit in the constraints I'm under.
