Anyone have any experience with early Alco Engines? particularly with torque figures of the primary lube oil screen cover. They are a fairly poor design ( the cover stands proud of the cylinder) with too little torque resulting in a blown gasket and a spectacular mess, or too tight thereby cracking the cover. Fasteners consistof four fairly substantial 1 1/4'' nuts with a primitive rubberized cork gasket.

These folks might be able to help you out with some alternate gasket materials:

If that doesn't work out, try getting in touch with some of the rail museums. Might find an old-time mechanic that knows what was really needed to keep the oil in.

These beasties pre-date my experience.
