Hi, some of the beams we adquired for the construction of a skid, came withs "details" so its there a rule or a specification, that describe the allowable defects on beams?. One of the beams came with a scratch of 0.6 mms deep, on the web section. the question its if we can use that beam or just we have to discard it.

Thanks.

AISC has specs on tolerences. More importantly, a deep scratch in high tension zone will lead to a stress crack under load. I recommend grainding out and patching the deep scratch.

and then (if you can) orient the beam so that the repair is on the compression side of the bending stress field; or at least as far form the peak tension stress..
