I'll be converting alternator to motor. At the backside there will be an encoder used for closed loop torque control.
There are some videos on the internet about this but they are not specific about the model of the car from where the alternator was taken. Does anyone know some models that will be structurally stable without the backplate (if they have any) and would not require drilling on the backside?
Even better if there is a screw hole in the shaft at the backside, just like servos and steppers.

See if the counter workers at NAPA can help, or at a car-reclaim yard. Either group of people will handle more alternators in a week than most people see in a lifetime.

Yea that was my line of thought as well.
They'll probably be like "Ok, this guy wants to buy alternator for 30 bucks but he will ask million questions about it". So wanted to check with you guys here first :) .

Check out the alternator for the original old air-cooled VW Beetle. The front (rear-facing in the car) of the alternator has an exposed shaft for the pulley, the rear (front-facing in the car) has an exposed shaft for the engine cooling fan.

The original Beetles used a generator.
Still makes a good motor.
Different controls though.

That's one interesting looking alternator [2thumbsup]
Thx

This may be a little better:
The 1977 VW Beetle was built with an alternator, though many cars have had they engines swapped. If your car has an earlier VW engine, you may have a generator instead of an alternator. We offer a complete selection of both alternators and generators for your 1977 Volkswagen Beet
You may also choose to convert an earlier generator engine to an alternator with our Alternator Conversion Kit. This kit includes everything you need; a NEW Bosch alternator, alternator stand, 3-piece alternator backing plate, alternator strap, and instructions.
