Any ideas on data reference for LCD module?

I've come across an LCD module, VERY tiny unit, in an existing design. It's a small, 4 char. by 2 line unit, measuring .75" x .75" x .0625". I'm interested in using this module for a design I'm working on, but the unit is completely devoid of any markings, and the manufacturer isn't lettin' on who makes it. I'm nearly certain it's a production model, not manufactured by (or specifically for) this company, since it's not a high-quantity product. I originally thought it may be a Hitachi HD44780-style controller, since the connector on the module has 14 pins (it's not backlit), but it only has 9 of the pins connected; The first 3 and last 2 pins are not. Since every hitachi design I've ever seen uses the first 3 pins for vcc, vss, and voo, I'm pretty sure it's not hitachi-based. Also, I tracked down the vcc/vss lines and tried feeding it a few hitachi commands in 4-bit, with several variations of possible pinouts, with no response.
Anyway, does anyone know anything about a production model module like this? My searches have all turned up blank so far...
