COULD YOU PLEASE ADVISE HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT TYPE OF API 2C PEDESTAL CRANES (TYPE A, B, C,D OR E)?

Obtain the API Specification 2C and begin reading it. Then consult a Professional Engineer with the loading requirements for your selection Type A thru E. Ask for a quotation or bid request. Tendor this out to the industry. Pick the one that best suits your needs.

This would be the standard industry practice.

The 5 crane types are shown at the front (Page 1)of API 2C. You need to determine your needs. Where do you want the operator? Do you need speed of luffing and swinging or do you need accuracy of holding a load steady for a long time. The hydraulic ram boom Types A & B are fast but have problems holding the boom in one position for a long time without movement.

Different manufacturers offer different types. As Cockroach said, put together your requirements and then start talking to the various crane companies to see if they can fit your needs. The more you study and learn about what you need, how it will be used and what is actually available on the market, the better questions you can ask.

First, thank you for your advice.

Actually, API 2C doesn’t mention the application and the advantages/ disadvantages of each crane type.
And as you said each supplier will provide a different type. So, it will be impossible to align vendors during the technical bid evaluation. For example:
I received two offers for pedestal crane 45MT at 13m Elec-hyd driven for offshore application, with Cv 2.0 (Default Dynamic Method):
First offered crane is type A with cabin
Second crane is type C.
Both of them are technically acceptable since they are in full compliance with the technical supply specification sent to suppliers…
Hence, the prices will be deferent and maybe we will lose the right crane if we choose the cheaper.

You’ve made a pretty good case for understanding the advantages and disadvantages of each of the crane types, before you go out for bids or make a purchase. Without the API 2C code you are looking I don’t know crane type A from type B, can you give them a real name, or post those pages of the API 2C spec. You might eliminate some vendors out-of-hand because they don’t offer what you need. And, only you know what you need. Or at least you should if you are responsible for this purchase. There are a number of books on the subject. Maybe Googling the various types and their pros and cons would enlighten you.

Dear dhengr,
you find here an extract from the API2C.

Type A: pedestal crane box boom type it can be with additional platform (for the operator cabin and machinery room)
type B: pedestal crane with extendable boom type(telescopic boom)
type C: lattice boom pedestal crane
type D: lattice boom pedestal crane with counter weight
type E: lattice boom pedestal crane with King Post

Generally, There are four main types of boom to consider
- box section(which may be a single box or A-frame construction)
- lattice construction
- knuckle boom (or articulated boom)
- telescopic boom(extendable boom).

In API 2C, there is no indication about the knuckle boom type !?


Anyway, can you please advise me the books titles.

and do you think that cranes are classified by SWL/boom radius?
