Hello everyone,

I have had a doubt for a while about this issue. Where I work now (we design and manufacture HRSG) we always get from the end user the environment classification according to the EN 12944. My colleagues use this classification for almost every part of the supply, including items that do not fall under steel structure classification. For example, I am talking about valves actuators, transmitters housing (even if aluminum), steam silencer casing, etc etc.
In my opinion this is not correct. However all the suppliers of these items are more than willing to submit to us "certification letters" showing that their standard coating cycles are in accordance with the required environment classification of 12944

My question now is: how should we treat the coating of these items? Is there another applicable norm to follow or 12944 is still applicable?

Thank you,

Matteo

HRSG = (from Google :) heat recovery steam generator ?

Have you looked at EN 12944-1 Introduction and Section 1 Scope which define the field of application.

It only covers steel structures not aluminium and 1.3.4 gives exclusions to the type of coatings included in the standard; essentially only covering liquid applied paints. Do the "certification letters" include independent validation of the claims by testing to ISO 12944-6 or equivalent? The standard may be used for other types of structure and coatings by agreement between contracting parties.

The environment classes in 12944 are the same as those in ISO 9223, the latter also includes aluminium but note the C class is dependent on the individual metal so a C class for steel may be different to that for aluminium (for example). It is possible to use ISO 9223 classes for things like powder coated aluminium or continuously dipped galvanized parts but the coating should be qualified to some other system than 12944, for example the Qualicoat or GSB systems are commonly specified in building applications.

Yes, HRSG stands for Heat Recovery Steam Generator

Thank you for the replies, I will try to take a look at ISO9223 and to see what it says

Also, the certifications letters typically do not include any independent validation from a third party; mostly they are only self-certifications from the suppliers

MM
