I'm looking for a reference book that would have the common dead loads for building materials for a wood frame house. Such items as 2x4 stud walls with sheetrock, etc.

Check the ANSI/ASCE Standard 7-88 "Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures." I think there may be a newer release (7-93?), but it should steer you in the right direction.

ASCE 7-02 lists 16 psf for 3/4" ceramic or quarry tile on 1/2" mortar bed. What do you use for the dead load in normal homes that have 3/8" tile with the backer board?

With the backer board grouted down and the grout for the tile you have about 1/2" of mortar, I'm assuming the 16 psf above includes the backer board.
