Applying a shear stress in ANSYS

Hi There,

I'm trying to undertake a 2D patch test for shear (Txy), but I cannot figure out how to apply a shear stress in ANSYS.

I am presuming it has to do with applying a pressure, but it will only apply a positive or negative pressure perpendicular (i.e. into or out of) the face. I have spend a siginifcant amount of time trying to figure this out,I have v 8.0 and 9.0 of ANSYS.

Can anyone tell me how to do thisor provide any assistance?

You cannot APPLY a shear stress, just as you cannot strictly apply a tensile or compressive stress, as these are all STATES of stress as a result of some load applied to the system.

Thanks for your prompt reply!

However, I'm not comparing a physical structure, but investigating the validity of the shape function of the Finite Element by conducting (or attempting to, :)) a patch test. To do this I need to apply normal and shear stresses in 2D and 3D elements and surface tractions in 1D elements.

Applying a normal stress is achieved in ANSYS by applying a pressure, e.g. to a line in a 2D model. However, I do not know how the application of shear stress, e.g. to line in a 2D model, is achieved in ANSYS. It is how to accomplish this that I need to know.

NB I realise that the ANSYS elements are all valid, but the investigations I'm undertaking are for research purposes.
