Im looking at section 412 and cannot find whether or not they are actually required. The code seems to just explain how to install them. Can anyone chime in on this?

thanks

The IPC doesn't explicitly state where floor drains are required.

But other codes might. When a commercial kitchen has food prep sinks - they typically cannot connect directly to the sanitary sewer system. A floor sink or deep bodied floor drain is provided for this purpose. Sometimes one of the bowls of a three bowl sink is required to be indirectly connected.

The relief from a reduced pressure backflow preventor has to be indirectly connected - to a floor drain.

When HVAC equipment has condensate drainage - it has to go somewhere - typically a floor drain.

So - while they may not be "required" - they make good sense.

Well, the case is as follows:
Existing bathroom building with NO SLOPE floor. (in puerto rico) There are no doors to this bathroom's entry/exit so essentially if there is a flood all the water would flow outdoors.

I'm leaning on not putting in a drain to avoid tearing up the existing floor to install drains. So based on the last answer I got I would not violate code?

The floor drain would be a convenience to keep the flood semi contained inside the building and also to allow for washing down the floor.
