Hi All,

I am a 4th year civil engineering student and have a question regarding wall design.

We have a project to design an underground water tank, approx 10m long, 5m wide, and 3.5m deep. The water table is near the ground surface and the lid of the tank will be required to support 7.5 kPa.

I am having some interpretation issues regarding the code for wall design that is subject to in plane bending, shear, and axial forces. I am considering the top of the wall to be unrestrained (the lid of the tank is not connected to the wall) and hence section 11 states to design it in accordance to section 9 and 10 as appropriate.

Do I simply take a 1m unit length of the wall and design it as a column and then apply minimum confinement and horizontal reo as per section 11?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Given this is a water retaining structure probably need to consider some other codes; specifically for water structures

Does the lid need to be disconnected from the wall?

I have reviewed the standard for concrete structures retaining liquids however it generally only supercedes 3600 in minimum reo and cover requirements

I have taken the approach of a precast lid with a sort of 'lock and key' connection detail with the wall and hence assumed no transfer of moment nor restraint. The wall I guess may act more of a cantilever subject to axial forces from the lid

Jamiemaccas,

I do not think we are supposed to be assisting you with your University assignments/projects!!

Hi Rapt,

Yes that is understandable! However I just need assistance with the interpretation of section 11. It just doesn't seem very clear to me is all.

Your lecturer wants to know if you can work it out for yourself!

Secondly, read the posting guidelines for this site. The third would appear to apply to you!
