Hello,

This question is about the standard bolt hole sizes. In usual scenarios, we say that bolt hole size shall be dia. of bolt + 1/16". But in the submittal I have, the contractor is using bolt hole sizes as dia. of bolt + 1/16" + 1/16". Does someone know if we can add 1/16" twice and where is the reference for it in ASCE 7-05.

I know this sounds like a small issue but we have many other issues in a 600-page submittal so we want to give contractor a clear guidance with reference so that they can clean the package.

Thanks for the help.

First I've heard of it... I think the AISC has opened up the 'slack' for 1" fasteners, a bit... but, not sure.

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Do you feel any better?

AISC not ASCE. Depends on the bolt diameter. 1/16" up to 7/8" dia, and 1/8" for 1" and above for STD holes.

From AISC 360-16:

You should ask the contractor who wrote that particular spec what their intention was.

The nominal standard hole diameter is typically taken as bolt diameter + 1/16" (This was updated to +1/8" for bolts >= 1" diameter in AISC 15th/RCSC2020). Your fabricator is likely going to work to shop drawings w/ holes per AISC Table J3.3 anyway.

In some cases, another 1/16" can be taken into account for structural calcs for field reaming during joint assembly.

My bad it's AISC 13th, I agree with 1 1/8" bolts but they are doing the same for 3/4" that's why I was a bit confused. I think they just messed up. Thank you for the help and instant responses.

In the past, detailers would use 1/8" oversized holes for galvanized material, presumably because the zinc narrows up the hole. I believe AISC does not condone this practice.

Fully-pretensioned bolts can sometimes be used with 1/8" oversized holes. Check with the EOR about the design intent.

Or maybe it's just an error.
