HI,

I am planning to weld a 100mm thick plate to the centre of an ASME b16.5 blind flange with a 6inch minimum thickness for a pressure application.

I got an asme IX weld qualification for 8" pipe. Can i use this weld qualification for the above mentioned thickness with this weld qualification.

Why don't you post the question under ASME? It a question pertaining to ASME after all.

Do you have a WPS that covers it?

What is the thickness range listed on your performance qualification record?

Best regards - Al

WPS's are for the 'how-to' and 'material-to-use' of the weld. A WPS has essentially nothing to do with the shape of the parts. The Welder Qualification is the 'skill' and 'degree-of-difficulty' part of the weld. The same WPS can be used for plates welded from both sides [very easy], socket-welds [easy], butt-welded pipe [hard] and restricted access boilertube welds [very hard]. ASME and AWS demand different Welder Quals for the first 3, and suggest a qualification test - 6G-Restricted - for the 4th.

WPS = What to use process, filler, fitup, preheat
Welder Qual = proof of necessary skill to make the weld
