In regards to an ASME pressure vessel nameplate with a NB registration number, is the ASME / NB marking REQUIRED to be made with the stamp or can it be engraved on the plate? I am required to use 316L on these nameplates and the thinnest material they can use is 20ga. The stamps will not leave a legible indication on the nameplate due to the hardness of the material. ?????

The ASME certification mark and the National Board mark must be stamped on the nameplate with the stamps that are provided to the company doing the work.

Here is what Section VIII, Div 1 Code states

(c) Nameplates may have markings produced by either
casting, etching, embossing, debossing, stamping, or engraving,
except that the Certification Mark shall be
stamped on the nameplate.

Just use a press to stamp your NBIC R certification stamp or ASME U certification stamp into the nameplate material. I've used same to stamp 2205 duplex stainless.
