Dear Engineering Friends.
I am currently reviewing a vessel manufactured in 1960. The markings on the nameplate below the ASME "U" symbol read: W; PXR; SR.
As you very well know only the W (for arc or flame welded) meets current Code.
The remaining two acronyms stand probably for X-ray level (PXR) and stress relief (SR).
Can anyone of you confirm my assumptions and provide full explanation for "PXR" acronym? Unfortunately my memory does not reach back to 1960 and I have no acces to that old CODE edition. Thanks.

The 1965 Code states the following:

W Arc or gas welded
R Riveted
B Brazed
F Forge welded
RES Resistance Welded
S Seamles

XR Completely Radiographed to extent required by code
PXR Only when part the vessel has been radiographed.

HT When the whole vessel has been heat treated.
PHT When part of the vessel has been heat treated.

This letters are used under the Code Symbol.

Thanks unclesyd.
As always, you are a big help.
Anybody, any take on SR? I know we both don't like calling PWHT - Stress Relieve but I think that SR would mean exactly that, especially that it is in the Heat Treatment spot on the nameplate.

Can you describe the vessel in question?

There are several people that have access to codes prior to 1960 that should pickup on your question.

It also states in UG-116 par.(c)(1965)where the aforementioned descriptives are listed that vessels employing a combination of types of construction shall be marked to indicate all of the types of construction used.

My copy of the 1954 Edition of ASME B&PV code refers to stress relieving as a separate operation or step after fusion welding. So, SR would indicate that stress relief was performed.

I haven't sen the vessel yet. It is used in nuclear application. I think with your and metengr help I should have enough info. I am tracing the Manufacture Data Report with National Board. There should be some info there.
